AUGUST2013

Hello there, SEO fans!

Between Google's Adwords keyword planner, their laying out of authorship best practices, in-depth articles getting some action in SERPs, and the carousel taking over, it's been a pretty serious business month for Google. And we've got it all detailed for you right here, along with a bit of news from Facebook and a pretty stellar infographic.

As always, thanks for reading . . . and ENJOY!

"Hello Google AdWords Keyword Planner. I guess we'll be getting much closer now."

Hello Google AdWords Keyword Planner. I guess we'll be getting much closer now. This is what I said aloud to myself as I sat at my desk this morning, realizing Google finally made good on their word to shut down the Keyword Tool. This move has been long expected, and dreaded for many months.

An all-inclusive keyword tool like the new Keyword Planner infers the added benefits of time management and great functionality, but that's yet to be seen. Having traffic estimates on the same page along with Google's "insight" on relevant Adgroups looks to be especially useful as well as a time-saver–I'd been using Google's dropdown menu to grab relevant long tail ideas. Hopefully I can skip that step now ...

From Desktop to Devices, Page Speed is Not a More Important Factor for Mobile

From Desktop to Devices, Page Speed is Not a More Important Factor for Mobile Matt Cutts recently released a video answer to the question, "Is page speed a more important ranking factor for mobile sites?"

In his reply Matt explains that site speed, when used as a ranking factor, will be considered contextually—not in an absolute number—because website speed varies based on country, bandwidth, and a variety of other factors. He encourages website owners to look at the "neighborhood of websites" returned in search results with your own and compare speed, cautioning that if you're the outlier, you very well could see your rankings affected ...

The Greatest Showdown in the Universe:
Star Wars v. Star Trek

Star Wars VS Star Trek In the middle of June, the CM Team took a trip to Philly to showcase our talents at a trade show.

We revealed our new trade show booth and entertained exhibitors and visitors alike with our quirky Star Wars/Star Trek knowledge survey. Our goal was to get the conversation flowing and to ignite some excitement to the people walking through the trade show.

We asked a variety of thought-provoking questions such as... "Who would you rather get a beer with?" "What would be your weapon of choice?" and the debate inspiring, "Which was the better manufactured vehicle- USS Enterprise, or Millennium Falcon?"

Google Answers Authorship Questions, Still Advises Being Human

Google Answers Authorship Questions, Still Advises Being Human We all know by now how important authorship is to the Google ecosystem, but sometimes find that the oft reticent search giant leaves us in a position of wondering if we're doing everything the way they intended. Well, at least today we can go forth with confidence, as Google delighted us with some great answers to advanced FAQs on rel="author".

Thanks to the Webmaster Central blog, we now know what kind of pages can be used with authorship, about connecting multi-lingual content, and the difference between rel="author" and rel="publisher". Heck, they even told us why we shouldn't write articles as the Pied Piper! Here are some key takeaways ...

Mobile First Impressions: You've Got One Second

Mobile First Impressions: You've Got One Second You've always known first impressions are important. That's what first-day-of-school outfits were for growing up. That's why job interviews are so important. That's why people agonize over first dates. (Pro tip: if you didn't always know first impressions were important: they are.)

Only, with interpersonal interactions, your first impression of someone else takes longer than .1 second to formulate. If you stumble over a few words or miss their name the first time, you have a minute or so to recover.

When interacting with websites, users don't have the same patient forgiveness. Research has shown that if a page takes longer than .1-1 seconds to load ...

Facebook's Next Step in the Race to Win the Internet

Facebook's Next Step in the Race to Win the Internet Per usual, Facebook has been making some changes. Although this time, for those of us with an appetite, this update may be one we are going to want to hold on to.

Facebook has been working on refreshing both iOS and Android mobile apps, in order to make them more useful overall. (We won't mention that Facebook gets a little something out of keeping us on their app for more functions.)

According to Facebook, "Each month, more than 800 million people access Facebook on a mobile device. And today we're announcing two updates to mobile Pages launching later this week that will ...

Google In-Depth Articles Feature: Verbosity Wins In the End!

Google In-Depth Articles Feature: Verbosity Wins In the End! Contrary to the opinions of at least 98% of the people in my immediate vicinity, Google has confirmed that it just might be okay to be a "Chatty Cathy" online—especially if that mindset conveys to the content you provide on your website. That's right, yesterday Google introduced In-Depth Articles, a new feature showcasing long-form articles in Google Search results.

Explains Google: "To understand a broad topic, sometimes you need more than a quick answer. Our research indicates perhaps 10% of people's daily information needs fit this category — topics like stem cell research, happiness, and love, to name just a few. That's why over the next few days we'll be rolling out ...

Facebook Auto-Play Ads: Innovation or Nightmare?

Facebook Auto-Play Ads: Innovation or Nightmare? We know ads can get a bad rap. Even Twitter co-founder, Biz Stone, mentioned Facebook should release an ad-free version. However, that hasn't held Facebook back from deciding to roll out some obnoxious auto-play video ads.

With a payday of around $1-2.5 million a day, it's easy to see the appeal for Facebook. The video ads have a planned launch of sometime "later this year."

"While the social network already allows advertisers to upload videos to their Facebook page and then broadcast them into a user's news feed, the new service would let marketers buy their way directly into a person's feed with a 15-second pitch, according to the ...

Your Ride on the Carousel and Your Site's Traffic May Depend on It

Still Not on Google+? Your Ride on the Carousel and Your Site's Traffic May Depend on It Some of you may have started to notice the convenient scrolling bar appearing across your local search results. If not – go search for pizza places (because pizza) in your city, then come back to us. Google has been serving us results with a new addition affectionately coined: Google Carousel.

What does the new feature entail for users?

Most obviously, it gathers images into a user-friendly row at the top of your local search results. This neatly displays the information you're most searching for, making it immediately accessible. It also creates a visual impact when presenting the local businesses in ...
