Have You Checked Your Hat Recently?

Have You Checked Your Hat Recently?Black hat, white hat, grey hat – they might sound like terms straight out of a fashion magazine, but in reality they're most often used to describe the type of web marketing services that a company provides. Basically, it's shorthand to describe how well a particular technique adheres to the guidelines set down by Google, Bing, and other search engines. YouTube Video Celebrates 7 Years

YouTube Video Celebrates 7 YearsHappy birthday, YouTube. It's hard to believe that seven years have passed since the first video was uploaded to YouTube.com on Saturday, April 23, 2005 at 8:27 p.m. It was about a trip to the zoo. Best of the Best of the Web

April has been a busy month. If you're just getting back from spring break, don't worryŚwe've got the highlights from the past month laid out for you right here:

Although we've heard differing accounts on the engagement of fans with new brand Timeline pages, ReadWriteWeb reported a definite drop in engagement, whether or not that decrease was actually caused by the switch. "The results of our study do not indicate whether Timeline itself was the direct cause of the decrease in engagement," Anum Huss wrote in a post on HubSpot's blog. "However, the sharp decline occurred simultaneously with the drop, raising the potential of the two being correlated."

Google scared/amazed us all with their vision for the future, viewable here:

Facebook bought Instagram for a cool $1 billion, and the Internet consequently exploded with opinions. Aside from the angry tweets and, ironically, Facebook posts, from people vowing to quit Instagram now that it has "sold out," Tech Crunch mused on the potential new positive features the acquisition could bring about, including the ability to filter Facebook photos, tag Facebook friends in Instagram, and log into Instagram through Facebook. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to us.

Jon Mitchell from ReadWriteWeb had a great insight as to why Facebook social reading apps don't work . "Frictionless sharing is the prime example of a feature that's only good for Facebook and advertisers," Mitchell wrote, "but it's spun as something fun for users. It takes all the value out of the act of sharing. When you intentionally share the fact that you're listening to a song, you're giving a signal. 'I love this song.' When your entire Spotify playlist is shared in the background, you're just spamming."

Did You Know?

The technology that would eventually build the Internet began back in the 1960′s at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The first message ever to be transmitted was, quite simply, "LOG". As it turns out, this short message was the user's attempt to type "LOGIN", but the network crashed under the huge load of data ... from the letter G.
