What’s in a Domain Name? Or 6 million. . .

VeriSign, the worldwide leader in domain names, recently released their latest Domain Name Industry Brief and revealed that they added a shocking 6.1 million domain names to the Internet in their fourth quarter of 2012.

With this massive amount of domain names added to their existing bunch, they had reached an astounding 252 million domain names worldwide across all top-level domains at the end of last year. VeriSign suggests that the number is well over that quarter of a billion now.

VeriSign notes that this increase gave them a growth rate of 2.5 percent over the third quarter in 2012, making this their eighth straight quarter with greater than 2 percent growth.
