Once again, Facebook is a little late to the game. As they recently began verifying pages like Twitter, they have now decided to cave to the popular (or not so popular) trend of #hashtagging as well.
To those of the users who have continued to hashtag aimlessly on Facebook, perhaps your problems are solved and dreams are coming true. Previously pointless hashtags will now be clickable on Facebook, with the end goal being to find out what is going on around you.
While hashtagging has been a prevalent method of socializing since it was rolled out on Twitter, Facebook had not yet succumbed to the trend like Pinterest, Instagram, and Tumblr.
Now, Facebook is utilizing the hashtag to link to relevant topics and discussions and will feature a News Feed displaying what other people and Pages are talking about specific events or topics.
Facebook has reassured users that even with the roll out of hashtags on the social network, privacy will still be respected, and if you want it only visible to friends then only friends with see your posts in the hashtag feed.
Just don’t expect to be able to view these new Facebook hashtags on your mobile device right away. While Facebook is sure that everyone will have hashtagging capability in the next week, they don’t intend for mobile to support the feature just yet. You can use a hashtag from your mobile, however you won’t be able to view the feed for hashtags on Facebook as of now. Facebook claimed that they weren’t going to stop here:
“Hashtags are just the first step. We’ll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights, that help people discover more of the world’s conversations.”
Have you heard the term #hashtag enough yet?
