A Brief Case Study on the SEO Importance of Title Tags

May 14, 2009 written by Jeremy

I don’t know many SEO’s who disagree about the importance of title tags. But we all know it’s a number of different factors, both internal and external, which produce top (Google) rankings.  However, I have a brand new site with virtually ZERO content and not a single back link.  This site is currently ranked #1 in Google out of 17,200,000 results for one keyword and ranked #1 out of 74,000,000 results for another.  Why?  Because of keyword rich, targeted title tags.

And no folks, I’m not talking about a keyword stuffed, spammy title.  After all, without a compelling, well written title, you aren’t likely to get that coveted click through.  Aside from these two #1 rankings, this site has about 5 other top 10 rankings…All because of the title tags and perhaps, to a lesser extent, the meta descriptions.  So, the next time someone tries to tell you title tags are not important, nod in agreement and say “yeah, ok!”

For small timers as well as medium size players, the global economic slow down has started to pinch. Now the time for them to change has come too, unless they optimize their site with tools of SEO services such as, blogs, links, affiliate marketing, article submission, press-releases, e-mail marketing etc. They will soon be outpaced by the competitors and lose a lot of business.

Henry, not sure what this has to do with the topic of the blog post. But thanks for your comment none the less. I just hope its not a shameless plug for the real traffic.com

Jeremy, I’m surprised that you left that comment there. Usually, I just delete stuff like that.

Anyway, I don’t know anyone who has argued that page titles are not important. Page titles are probably the most important item on-page optimization.

Hi SEO Web Design. I typically delete comments like Henry’s, but on that particular day I felt like calling him out for his comment spam.

Anyway, thanks for joining the conversation with some useful dialogue.

I sometimes find what I see to be amazing when I look at the title tags on some websites.

The need to constantly tweak those on my commerce website is one of many things that I have learned at least in part from attending the MIVA Small Business Conferences four years in a row.
