5 Tech-Related Changes You Should Have Made in 2011, But Didn’t

December 29, 2011

As we roll into 2012, many of us begin to reflect on what we might have done differently in 2011–mainly, sticking to the resolutions we made to start out with. Fear not though, as you’ve been gifted with a New Year to accomplish that which slipped your mind in 2011, and now you can turn those promises into priorities! For 2012, here’s a list of important priorities for your New Year, as well as some tips on how to keep them from slipping into 2013.

1. Go Paperless
Really. Do your tiny little part to help the environment. It’s easy to get back into old habits of writing things down.

How to Keep It?
Resist the urge to print. If it can be done digitally, give it a try. Use security protocols for things that need privacy. If you have to print it, shred it or recycle it when you’re done.

2. Try Social Media
Remember the old adage, Don’t knock it ‘til you try it? Stop being old-fashioned and see what the fuss is all about. It’s here to stay. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

How to Keep It?
Check out a few different social media websites without signing up. See how you feel about it. Whether it is for your personal enjoyment or as a social media marketing attempt, we can help you get started.

3.  Organize Your E-mail
Stop sucking up valuable computer storage and hanging on to the past.

How to Keep It?
Stop procrastinating. Set aside an hour and delete everything that is not essential. Sort your mailbox by recipient and don’t dawdle. Whether you check off boxes or hold down the shift key, be quick about it. You’ll have a sense of accomplishment when you’re done. Of course, you could just highlight everything & hit the delete key.

4.  Blog More
Ok. Everyone says that every year. Most people make it through the end of January just fine. It’s the other 11 months that seem to get lost in the shuffle of not enough time or not enough topics.

How to Keep It?
Start small – Once a week, once a month. Put it on your calendar and try to stick with it. If you enjoy blogging, think of it as a reward, not a chore. If you don’t like writing or can’t seem to find the time, hire someone to do it for you or designate someone else.

5.  Make Better Use of Your Time
Spend more time doing the things you keep wishing you had time to do.

How to Keep It?
Find a use for the computer and Smartphone apps that cut down on the amount of time you spend doing things.  If you find yourself spending more time on the computer than you would like, take a smaller amount of time now to save a lot of time later. Schedule repetitive tasks, like blog posts, social media updates and e-mails. Don’t forget that it’s ok to turn off your phone, your laptop, your netbook. The Internet will still be there when you get back.
